RULES OF CARD GAME PIQUET

BASIC RULES

The game is for two players using a 32 card deck which omits 2 to 6 in each suit. The cards rank in descending order: ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9, 8, 7. There is the deal alternating because non-dealer has an advantage. He names a trump suit ( mode with trumps ) and may change more cards. 12 cards are dealt. The remaining 8 cards form the talon. The dealer has to divide these cards. He places 5 cards on the right. The non-dealer is in command of these cards. Last 3 cards have to be placed on the left. It belongs to dealer. Players must exchange at least ONE card. Non-dealer can exchange FIVE cards or LESS. Both players have to announce number of left cards before picking up cards. They can look at the remainder of own cards. If non-dealer agrees to announce trump suit before he change cards, he can look at 3 cards from talon, which belong to dealer ( mode with trumps ). Dealer can exchange useless cards on nondealer's remained cards and on own 3 cards. The aim of the exchange is to collect such suits, which let to win more tricks and get well bonuses. A suit led must be followed if possible. If the suit cannot be followed, then it is obligatory to trump ( mode with trumps ).

BONUSES FOR DECLARATIONS

Kinds of scoring combinations in order of announcing: 1) the most cards in one suit (point); 2) the longest run of consecutive cards in one suit (sequence); 3) the set of cards of the same rank ( Ace,King,Queen,Jack,10 ). Only the player with the best combination in each kind scores for that kind. Equal length points are compared by card values calculation : ace - 11; king, queen, jack, ten - 10 points; nine - 9 points; eight - 8; seven - 7. The number of cards is the value of the bonus. When comparing sequences one should bear in mind that: senior sequence is that one, which contains more cards. Equal length sequences are compared according to the highest card: A,K,Q,J is stronger then J, 10, 9, 8. Typical situation: someone has 5 hearts and 3 spades sequences, but the opponent has 4 diamonds sequence, the one who holds 5 hearts scores 15 points for them and 3 points for 3 spades. Values of the bonus for sequences: 3 cards - 3 points; 4 cards - 4; 5 cards - 15; 6 cards - 16; 7 cards - 17 points; 8 cards - 18 points. 3 aces, 3 kings, 3 queens, 3 jacks, 3 tens scores 3 points. 4 aces, 4 kings, 4 queens, 4 jacks, 4 tens scores 14 points. 4 tens are stronger then 3 aces. Equal length sets are compared according to the higher ranked cards. The one, who has 4 kings, can score for 3 tens too, even if the opponent holds 3 queens.

SCORRING

1 point is scored each time a card is led and 1 point is scored for winning trick. There is 4 points for winning the last trick. If someone won 12 tricks, he gets bonus 40 points for kapot. If 12 tricks are announced before the exchange of cards, he scores 80 bonus points. The player who wins more tricks than opponent scores 10 bonus points. Players score points for combinations and events. In case someone scores 30 points in declarations, before opponent has scored anything, he gains a repique. Repique is worth 60 points. In case someone scores several points for combinations, then scores some points in play and in such a way reaches 30 points before opponent scores anything, he scores 30 bonus points (pique). The winner has higher score at the end of partie. The Parties can consist of more then 6 deals. The partie is a draw by adding two hands while scores are equal after 6,8,10,... deal. Players try to score more then the opponent over the 6 deals or at least score more then 99 points in the partie. At the end of the game loser pays the winner the difference between player's scores plus 100, if he scored 100 points or more.Otherwise the loser pays the winner SUM of the player's scores plus 100. There is one more possibility to score. If a player is dealt a hand with no court cards ( J,Q,K ), he may announce carte blanche and score 10 points by dealing the cards face up after his opponent has discarded but before he discard.

TACTICS, TRICS, EXAMPLES

All examles are from real hands of computer card game CARDPARADE.

Here you see a situation which forces us be deep in thought. Player has 4 jacks. It's very good: this set values in 14 points. But he has no aces. 4 aces are better combination then 4 jacks. Player can hinder to opponent to collect 4 aces by exchanging of maximum cards (5 or at least 4). Then probability to get an ace is enogh big. He has also 4 spades and there is a possibility to fight for most cards in one suit and longest run of consecutive cards. Though player has only 4 spades and 2 hearts (it means that opponent may have 6 hearts), there is a hope that among 5 cards for exchange are two spades or 1 spade and 1 heart. Obviously we found one more reason to exchange as many cards as possible.

Difficult choice: 4 queens, 3 jacks. Which cards are more suitable for exchange?

Queens are the victim

Also there are 3 queens. If player will get one more queen, he will score 14 points for 4 queens. King of hearts is enough strong card too. So we are ready to exchange only 7 of clubs and 7 of diamonds. But it's absolutely insufficiently! It's a nesessery to sacriface something: spades or queens. Player chose queens (of course except queen of spades, you see four cards marked for exchange on picture). Then he thought one more time and part with king of hearts.

Here you see result of exchange. Player got ace of diamond, 4 jacks are now senior set (14 poins). He got also king of spades. Opponent hasn't 4 consecutive cards. You may deduct it by cards on picture. So KQJ10 are senior run of consecutive cards (4 points). As to MOST CARDS IN ONE SUIT: K Q J 10 8 are 48 points. Opponent may have 5 hearts: A Q 10 8 7. But it's only 46 points. So player scored 5 poins more. He won after announcements 23 : 0. I guess that exchange was succesfull. May be player will score not too many points for tricks, but it's very difficult to win everything.

Result: exchange was succesful
